City Earns Smart Growth Community Excellence Award for STC

April 14, 2008: The Smart Growth Education Foundation (SGEF) presented the City of Shaker Heights with its Smart Growth Community Excellence Award for Mixed Use Development for redevelopment of the Shaker Town Center District.

 The redevelopment project entailed $60 million of private/public investment including:

  • $38 million in the Avalon Station loft condominiums;
  • $3 million of facade and other improvements to the shopping center and Heinen's;
  • Construction of the new $5 million firehouse;
  • $13 million in public improvements; and
  • Redevelopment of the south side of Chagrin Boulevard, opposite the shopping center.

The award recognizes the City’s leadership in smart growth community planning and residential development. Also recognized by the award are project architects and developers City Architecture, Crescendo Development and Heartland Developers.

The SGEF evaluates projects on the basis of their impact on precious resources in fully developed areas of Northeast Ohio. It looks at how the site preserves or reuses previously developed land, uses current infrastructure, is environmentally sensitive, addresses transportation, provides choice in housing style and pricing levels, and how it blends with surrounding residential and/or commercial neighborhood character.

The SGEF works in Northeast Ohio to educate local governments regarding planning and development concepts, to form partnerships with other smart growth-related groups and to encourage local governments to achieve residential growth, environmental compatibility and quality home choices for all economic segments of the region.
