Shaker Launches Recreational Trifecta

April 25, 2008: Three events are scheduled to introduce new or newly renovated recreational facilities to Shaker residents ready to enjoy the beautiful weather in these beautiful settings: Shaker Median Trail, Horseshoe Lake Park and Thornton Park.
  • A ribbon-cutting at the Shaker Median Trail with Mayor Earl Leiken and members of Council is scheduled on May 10 at 10 a.m. Residents are invited to join a 2.25 mile group bike ride (walkers, joggers and dogs welcome) to Horseshoe Lake Park. Meet at the Green Road RTA Station parking lot. The event coincides with the wider launching of “Cleveland Bicycle Week” (May 11-17) and during what the League of American Bicyclists has established as National Bike Month. Rain date: May 17.
  • Horseshoe Lake Park is the setting for another ribbon cutting with the Mayor and Council on May 24 at 9:30 a.m. The annual pancake breakfast is scheduled inside the dramatically transformed park from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. Tours of the park and trails are scheduled at 9:45 and 10 a.m. Rain date: May 25.
  • The City joins Southeast Family YMCA and South Pointe Hospital in sponsorship of a Free Aquatic Safety Day on Saturday May 24 at Thornton Park Pool. Free water safety classes for children ages 5 to 12 and their parents begin at 1 p.m. For more information and to reserve a spot, call 491-1295 by May 19.

All facilities were renovated as a result of a Recreation & Leisure Assessment the City undertook beginning in 2004 and are ADA accessible. Residents identified a number of recreational priorities, most of which are now a reality. For more information about the assessment process, visit shakeronline.com.
