Grass Bag Flag Program
(August 2004) Shaker residents place their grass clippings in specially marked Shaker bags that are picked up on regular rubbish collection days.  On any given collection day, separate grass crews go to every home on the route, finding bags at only 25% of the homes. To make the pickup more efficient, a program has been designed to flag the homes with bags.

Health Department Addressing Reappearance of Rabies in Ohio
(September 2004) Rabies, a viral infection that affects animals and people, and which is almost always fatal, has shown up in raccoons in Ohio. The raccoon population is large and evident. Addressing the Power Outage Problem in Shaker
(July 2004) Dennis Chack, President of the Illuminating Company, has made a commitment to the City of Shaker Heights to address the issue of frequent power outages. Citywide Study on Lending and Foreclosure Trends Begun
(June 2004) A nationwide increase in the number of foreclosures and predatory lending practices has prompted cities to study the impact on local neighborhoods. In Shaker Heights, a grant from the US Housing and Urban Development Department is funding such a study. The study will be conducted by Cleveland State University and Housing Advocates, a non-profit organization that focuses on fair housing issues.
