Building Department

The Building Department is changing its Thursday counter hours. Effective September 1, bring permit and/or registration applications to the service counter at City Hall during the following times:

Monday-Wednesday    8 am-4:30 pm
Thursday                     8 am-noon (no permits or registrations issued after noon)
Friday                           8 am-4:30 pm

Deposit documents in the service counter drop box when the counter is closed. The Department will receive and process the documents the following business day. Building Department office hours remain the same, weekdays 8 am-5 pm.

The Building Department maintains the safety and superior quality of Shaker’s architecture. Inspectors are State-certified and are required to be licensed in at least two of the following areas:

  • Electrical
  • Plumbing
  • Heating
  • Structural

The department is responsible for:

  • New construction and renovation permits (residential and commercial)
  • Mechanical permits
  • Commercial property maintenance inspections
  • All permit work is inspected
  • 6,300 inspections are performed annually

All contractors performing work requiring a permit must obtain a Contractor Certficate of Registration prior to commencing work in the City.

Qualified rehabbers can receive special incentives through the Shaker Renovator Program.
