Seasonal Activities

At Thornton Park, there are so many ways to enjoy being outside any time of year. In the snowy winter months, residents catch chilly thrills on the sledding hills. When the temperatures rise, kids and adults alike practice swinging for the fences in our batting cages, or they can take to the courts — Thornton Park offers outdoor sand volleyball, tennis and basketball. The Skatepark is a popular attraction, too, offering skateboarders and inline skaters a safe place to practice new moves.

Basketball Court

Basketball courts are open year-round, weather-permitting. A Basketball Court pass and photo ID are required at all times. Trespassing will result in forfeiture of season pass privileges.

Monday through Friday, 9 am – 7 pm or dusk if earlier
Saturday, Sunday and holidays, 10 am – 8 pm or dusk if earlier

Court Passes
Season basketball passes may be purchased for $5 per resident. Passes are limited to Shaker Heights residents only and proof of residency is required. Passes are nontransferable or refundable. Daily admission fee is $7 per non-resident. Only one non-resident permitted per pass holder. Residents always have priority. Non-resident admissions are not granted between Memorial Day and Labor Day.

Sand Volleyball Court

The sand volleyball court located near Thornton Park's Farnsleigh Road entrance is available for use by Shaker residents only. It is available for play April to October, weather-permitting. Hours are weekdays 9 am to dusk, and weekends/holidays 10 am to dusk.

Tennis Courts

The City maintains tennis courts at Thornton Park and at the Shaker Family Center (Sussex). Both are available for use by Shaker residents only from April 1 through October 31. Hours are weekdays 9 am to dusk, and weekends/holidays 10 am to dusk.

Batting Cages

The batting cages at Thornton Park are available for use by Shaker residents only and are open for use May 1 through September 30. Hours are weekdays 9 am to dusk, and weekends/holidays 10 am to dusk.

Skatepark

The Skatepark is open year-round, weather-permitting. A Skatepark pass and photo ID are required at all times. Skaters must wear a helmet. Skate at your own risk. Only skateboards and in-line skates permitted.

Sledding Hill

The sledding hill is located on Farnsleigh Road, just east of Warrensville Center Road.

Sledding Hill Rules

    • Use at your own risk. Sledding hill is not supervised.
    • Children ages 10 and under must be supervised by an adult.
    • No snowboards, skis, toboggan or metal runner sleds permitted.
    • Smaller children are encouraged to use small hill.
    • Construction of jumps and moguls is prohibited.
    • Exit bottom of hill promptly.

Swimming Pool

Thornton Park's 50-meter swimming pool is open Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day. The pool area also includes a current channel, splash zone, two slides, diving boards, and a tot pool for children age six and under (accompanied by a supervising adult age 18 and over).

  • Pool may close due to cold or inclement weather or when temperature is below 65 degrees (lap swimming may still be available).
  • Regulation swimwear required.
  • Only US Coast Guard approved flotation devices.
  • 15-minute rest periods, every hour during open swim, noon to 7 pm
  • During rest periods, adults 18+ may swim laps and children 3 years and under, accompanied by an adult, may swim in 3 ft. section.
  • Pool management determines rest periods based on pool attendance.

Thornton Park
Spend summer days poolside at Thornton Park, enjoying the sun and cooling off in our 50-meter pool, splash zone, current channel, water slides, and tot pool. Season passes are available. The pool is open Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day.

Prefer ice to water? Lace up your skates (or rent ours) and take a glide around the ice arena, open year-round. Skating lessons for all levels and ages and summer skating passes are available.

Other seasonal activities at Thornton Park include outdoor basketball, sand volleyball, tennis, batting cages and a skatepark.

Recreation Department Class and Camp Registration
The Recreation Department offers a variety of classes and camps to enrich bodies and minds throughout the year and during school breaks. Take advantage of a weekend class in the arts or enroll your child in one of our popular summer camps. Registration is first-come, first-served, so be sure to register early, as some classes fill quickly. Registration ends and classes close two business days prior to first day of class.

Proof of residency required: driver's license, current utility bill, lease or purchase agreement. Current holders of Recreation ID cards must have cards renewed annually as proof of residency.

Parks and Playgrounds
The City of Shaker Heights has nine public playgrounds and Horseshoe Lake Park — a beautiful park with a central open space that includes a playground and swings for children, two pavillions, and 1.3 miles of wooded trails for hiking, walking, and biking.

General Information
Recreation brochures are published three times/year and the camp brochure is published once/year. Brochures are mailed, at no charge, to residents of the Shaker City School District.

The City of Shaker Heights may terminate a class with fewer than the required number of participants and provide a full refund/credit. Programs subject to change of location and/or personnel. Decisions to hold classes are based on enrollment 72 hours prior to first class; no refunds granted after second session except for injury or illness. (Doctor's letter required.) Refund claim forms must be submitted 72 hours prior to the start of the first class. Special programs such as child care, camps, and one-nighters handled on case-by-case basis.

Recreation Department Policies

Non-Endorsement Policy The City of Shaker Heights does not necessarily endorse the opinions or business affiliations of the individuals who may teach the classes and programs.

Disability Policy The City is committed to providing access to recreational programming for all. For individuals with special needs, please call 216-491-1295 for assistance from the appropriate Program Coordinator.

Credit/Refund Policy Credit/Refund Policy Refunds are available for classes or program registration cancellations by registrants up to 72 hours prior to the first class meeting. A refund claim form must be completed. Forms can be obtained at the Main Office in Thornton Park, at the Stephanie Tubbs Jones Community Building or online.

In the case of trips, money is refunded only if the space can be filled and if the cancellation request is received at least 48 hours in advance. A full refund will be issued in the event of a class cancellation due to insufficient enrollment.

$10 processing fee will be deducted with the following exceptions:

 $5 – 50+ programs $25 – Camps $25 – School Age Care $100 – Fall/Winter Hockey (except Mighty Mites) $25-  Fall/Winter Hockey Administrative Fee

A Recreation Department computer credit will be issued to all refunds at no charge. If a refund is preferred, contact Quiana Player at 216-491-2579. Please allow 3 – 4 weeks for refunds to be processed.
