Saturday, June 13 to Sunday, August 16, 2009

The rink will re-open on Monday, August 17, 2009.

Thornton Park Ice Arena is home ice for the Shaker Figure Skating Club, the Shaker Heights High School hockey team and Shaker Youth Hockey Association. Over the years, many exceptional skaters have won medals in regional and national competitions. The hockey teams have been frequent tournament champions.

Ice arena will be closed for the Ice Show from Monday, April 27 through Sunday, May 3, 2009.
Daily Skating Schedule for May 1 to June 12, 2009. Ice arena will be closed from June 13 through August 16, 2009.

Season passholders receive admission to public skating sessions, Friday Night Skate and Adult Skating sessions and a discount for Learn-to-Skate classes.  Proof of residency is required.  Please provide a current utility bill or any currently dated mail. Season pass refunds are not available. Partial season passes are on sale Friday, January 2, 2009. Passes are valid until Sunday, April 25.

Rink Rental

Ice rink may be reserved by private groups when not in use for programs. Rental rates begin at $195/hour. For ice time availability, please call Thornton Park at 216-491-1295.

Ice Skating Birthday Parties

Call Thornton Park at 216-491-1295 to reserve a date for an ice skating party. Group rates are available for parties of ten or more (rental skates and admission). Birthday parties are held during public skating sessions.

Shaker Figure Skating Club

Thornton Park is home to the Shaker Figure Skating Club (SFSC). Serious and competitive figure skaters participate in SFSC, a member of the United States Figure Skating Association (USFSA). For more information,  contact SFSC Membership Chair Emily Davidson.

2009 Spring Youth

Shaker Youth Hockey Pee Wee AA were the State Champions for 2007. Learn, compete and have fun with a variety of hockey programs which are available from beginner to expert. Information: 216-491-2581.

2009 Spring Season
Registration begins in March for Mite through Bantam. Space is limited.

  • Hockey: Mighty Mite: Begins early March. Ages 4-6. Learn basic hockey and skating skills such as forward and backward skating, stopping and turning. Required equipment includes: hockey helmet with cage, gloves, hockey skates, elbow pads, shoulder pads, hockey pants, and shin pads.
    Prerequisite: Snowplow Sam 3.

  • Skills Clinics: Checking, puck handling, power skating and team play are taught by the area's top coaches.

  • Spring Leagues: Tryouts are held late February and teams are formed in March.

  • Cross Ice Pond Hockey: Spring and summer pick up hockey. Play open hockey with your friends and others in a supervised and fun atmosphere.

  • Girls Sugar & Spice Hockey: March -May. Ages 5-15. Designed to teach the fundamentals of hockey and to play games in a learning and fun environment. Program consists of at least 15 total ice sessions (a combination of games against girls of similar age and ability from Mentor, Kent, Cleveland Heights, Erie, Strongsville, Youngstown, Columbus and Wooster. Weekday practices are in the evenings and the weekend games or practices are held from midmorning to early evening. All practices are at Thornton Park. Fee: $175; $150 SH res.

2009 Summer Hockey

  • Pre-Season Conditioning Clinic: August 17-21. This two week program is designed for two types of players. The first group who have built an outstanding foundation over the summer and the second, who need to get in good shape before tryouts. Focus is on integration of basic skating skills, agility and conditioning to prepare players for the grueling workouts at tryouts! Jerseys are not provided.
    Mites - 4:30-5:30 PM
    Squirts - 5:45-6:45 PM
    Pee Wee - 7:00-98:00 PM
    Bantam - 8:15-9:15 PM

Ice Hockey 2009-10 Fall/Winter Youth

Registration begins in May, space is limited. Teams from Shaker Youth Hockey Association compete in the Cleveland Suburban Hockey League. All new players and parents should contact Shaker Youth Hockey Coordinator Caleb Wyse at 491-2581 for more information.
