General Fire FAQs
Does the Shaker Heights Fire Department provide CPR classes?
The Fire Department can provide group CPR classes.  For information on the cost, call 216-491-1215 between 8:30 AM and 5:00 PM.

What is a Home Safety Survey and how can I arrange for one?
The Fire Department conducts free home safety surveys by appointment throughout the year.  The surveys are conducted by Shaker firefighters who identify hazards in the home.  The Department can also help with a home/apartment fire escape drill.  If you would like to schedule a home safety survey, call 216-491-1200 between the hours of 8:30 AM and 5:00 PM, Monday through Friday or e-mail us at fire@shakeronline.com.  For information on fire escape drills and fire escape tips, call 216-491-1215.  We will schedule an appointment to meet with you to discuss your plan.

What is a Life Safety System?
The Life Safety Alert System is a personal emergency response system for Shaker residents who are elderly, handicapped or medically at risk that links them directly to the Shaker Heights Fire Department. It is designed to monitor continously for fire and medical emergencies.

What is carbon monoxide and what are symptoms of CO poisoning?
Carbon Monoxide is a poisonous gas produced by burning any fuel. Therefore, any fuel-burning appliance in your home is a potential CO source. When appliances are kept in good working condition, they produce little CO. Improperly operating appliances can produce fatal CO concentrations in your home.  The initial symptoms of CO are similar to the flu (but without the fever). They include: dizziness, fatigue, headache, nausea, and irregular breathing.

What type of smoke detectors should I buy?
We recommend an ionization or photoelectric smoke detector which detects visible or invisible particles of combustion. Use only UL and/or FM approved detectors. If you have any questions about the purchase or installation/placement of your smoke detectors, please call the Fire Prevention Bureau at 216-491-1215.

Where are smoke detectors required?
All owners of singe-family residences, two- or multi-family dwellings are required to install a minimum of one smoke detector adjacent to the sleeping area in each dwelling unit and at least one additional smoke detector on each additional story of the dwelling, including the basement.  Smoke detectors and batteries will be provided free to residents who cannot afford them, and theFire Department will install them for those who require assistance.

Will the Fire Department come to our group meeting and speak with us about fire prevention?
An important job for the Shaker Heights Fire Department is educating our residents on fire related issues. Issues such as home fire safety, fire escape plans and senior citizen safety are just a few of the many topics the Department provides information on to the citizens of our community when asked to make presentations. The Department is available for speaking engagements to schools, church groups, businesses and neighborhood associations. For further information on how to schedule a member of the Fire Department for a speaking engagement, please call 216-491-1200 between the hours of 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM.

Will the Fire Department help with a home/apartment fire escape drill?
Please call the Fire Prevention Bureau 216-491-1215 for additional information on fire escape drills and fire escape tips. We will schedule an appointment to meet with you to discuss your plan.
