Step by Step to Employment

A few important starters:

• An application form is not required when applying for a position with the City. Sending a cover letter and resume is sufficient - every job posting includes instructions for making your submission.

• Pay close attention to the application deadline included in the posting. 

After submitting your credentials (either by application or cover letter and resume), you may wonder what to expect. Because the City usually receives a large number of applications for each job opening, the review process can take several weeks. Here's what's happening while you're waiting:

• Human Resources forwards your information to the appropriate department for review. If your application and/or resume was submitted via email, you will receive an email reply advising of receipt in the Human Resources Department.

• Depending on the number of responses to the posting, the initial review of submissions may take up to several weeks while the hiring supervisor carefully evaluates each candidate's eligibility.

• Eligibility will be based on experience, education and training.

• If your qualifications match those in the position listing, you may be contacted to schedule an interview.

• Only the most qualified applicants will be contacted for interviews.

• In some cases, a second or even third interview may be required.

As you see, the process can be very time-consuming! Please be patient.

And try not to be discouraged. Each application deserves careful consideration. If you are not chosen for an interview or if you are interviewed but not hired, your information will be kept on file with Human Resources for two years in case another position opens for which you are qualified.
