Lee-Van Aken Transit Oriented Development

The City is moving forward with a new project to reconnect development with Shaker's unique access to rapid transit. This is known as Transit-Oriented Development (TOD).

Ongoing redevelopment of the Shaker Town Center area occurs only steps away from the Lee/Van Aken RTA station -- not easily visible or accessible from the street.

Consultants who specialize in transit-oriented development have generated short- and long-term ideas for improvements to the Lee/Van Aken RTA station and development on land surrounding the station (within about a half-mile radius).

Approximately 30 residents and other interested individuals attended a public meeting in March at which consultants S. B. Friedman Associates and DLK Civic Design, presented the following:

  • a TOD primer and TOD best practices;
  • an assessment of the TOD area, including residential and retail market data; and
  • three conceptual scenarios. Click images to view PDFs of the scenarios.

(A) minimal change                     (B) moderate change

A                B

(C) significant future change

The scenario with significant change was most appealing to those attending the meeting. Specific elements of this concept include:

  • a consolidated civic core near the library including a new City Hall and Police Station;
  • townhouses along Lee Road in the locations of the current City Hall and Police Station;
  • widening the Lee Road bridge to add more room for train/bus transfers and sidewalk;
  • adding elevators, and parking to the RTA station;
  • adding a signature "roof" structure over the RTA station and Lee Road bridge.
