Paved Trail Proposed for Shaker Boulevard Median

A proposed multi-purpose, 1.5-mile paved trail to be located in the Shaker median would connect to the existing Beachwood City Park trail. The trail would travel through the Shaker Boulevard median from Sulgrave to Warrensville Center Road, south of the RTA tracks. It is designed for walking and biking. No motorized vehicles would be permitted. Have questions about the trail? Take a look at the plans. Council will vote on the plans at the next Council Meeting, on Monday, July 23 at 7:30 PM.

Trail Identified as Priority in Recreation Assessment

In 2004, Shaker undertook an evaluation of the City's need for recreation and leisure amenities. After extensive community meetings with over 400 residents and deliberation by a citizen task force, short, medium and long-term recreation initiatives were identified. Three top priorities emerged:

  1. Improve/Repair Fields;
  2. Improve Pool; and
  3. Add/Link Trails.

Improvements at both Thornton Park and Horseshoe Lake Park were a direct result of the Assessment process, completed in 2005. Designs for a new soccer field and improvements to existing soccer fields are being drawn.

Proposed Trail Plans Reflect Resident Feedback

Plans for the proposed trail were updated based on resident feedback received at Public Open House on July 2 and at  City Planning Commission on July 3. Changes include:

  • Guardrail removed and trail located farther away from road in area just west of Green Road RTA station. Trail will be no closer to road than 10' and typically at least 20' away.
  • Locations identified for benches, trash cans, and doggie bag stations.
  • Trail widened slightly through RTA parking lot. Locations identified.for additional landscaping/buffering.
