Placemaking Puts Shaker Residents in the Mix of Van Aken District Plans

Dateline: August 4, 2016 - For decades, Shaker Heights residents considered The Van Aken District as a rapid transit station, a couple of shopping plazas and one behemoth of an intersection. Earlier this summer, however, city officials prompted dozens of residents to consider the possibilities of a different, livelier use of the area.

RTA Rail Crossing Reconstruction at Southington/Shaker Boulevard Begins Monday, August 8

Traffic on Southington across Shaker prohibited during 19-day project

Dateline: August 1, 2016 - All vehicular and pedestrian traffic on Southington Rd. across Shaker Blvd. will be prohibited Monday, August 8 through Friday, August 26 for reconstruction of the intersection’s Green Line rail crossing. There will be no stop at Southington during the three-week construction period. Green line trains will run normally except on August 13-14 and 20-21, when buses will replace the trains, east of Shaker Square.

Discolored Water from Cleveland Water Repairs

Dateline: July 27, 2016 - Residents may notice discoloration in their water, as Cleveland Water crews work to repair a transmission main on Fairmount Blvd. Cleveland Water assures customers the water is safe to drink and use as normal. Crews have been dispatched to flush hydrants to help minimize the impact and will work to complete the repairs as soon as possible.

Fresh Market Closes Shaker Heights Store

Dateline: July 26, 2016 - The City and RMS learned this afternoon from The Fresh Market leadership that their store located in The Van Aken Center in Shaker Heights is closing and they will abandon their plans to break ground at the former Qua Buick location in 2016.

The grocery chain was purchased by Apollo Global Management LLC on April 27, 2016. Since that time, The Fresh Market leadership has worked with RMS and the City to gain site plan and Architectural Board of Review approval for the new store. However, The Fresh Market's new owner instead chose to abruptly close the Shaker Heights store and abandon the Cleveland market altogether. The Shaker store is one of over a dozen store closings and canceled openings by the new ownership team as they assess their brand strategy.
