Collection & Removal Home | Recycling | Mail Collection Notice 2009
The City Service Center is located at 15600 Chagrin Blvd.

Garbage/Schedule | Leaves, Grass & Snow Collection | Large Items | Holiday Collection Delays

Shaker’s beauty is enhanced by a well-organized and executed system of brush and rubbish collection. Friendly and welcoming neighborhoods are free of unsightly trash because most collections are made from back and side yards.

Garbage

  • Garbage must be bagged or wrapped and then placed inside rigid containers with tight-fitting lids.
  • On regular collection day, all waste must be
    • kept in containers;
    • placed in front of garage door or at corner of house, on driveway.
  • Do not store any other materials within 4-feet of the container area.
  • Containers must be outside of enclosures and fences.
  • Maximum 10 garbage bags per household per refuse pickup.
  • Maximum 10 flattened boxes per household per refuse pickup.
  • Containers must be galvanized or plastic weather-resistant, not to exceed 26 gallons in capacity or 40 pounds filled weight.
  • Containers must be maintained in sanitary condition at all times.

Schedule

  • Rubbish and recycling materials are collected once a week. Call 216-491-1490 for collection day for your street or look it up at Maps.
  • If pick-up from your house is missed, call 216-491-1490 within 24 hours of your regular pick-up day, or request collection the next day. Reporting a rubbish miss later than 24 hours after your regular day results in pick-up the following week.
  • During winter, keep driveways clear enough for vehicles to enter. Collection may be delayed a day following a major snowstorm. (Request to be notified of trash delays.)
  • Clear driveways of parked cars by 7:30 AM so rubbish is visible and scooters can enter.
  • Refuse must be in place by 7:30 AM.

*Collections scheduled on or after the following holidays will normally be one day late: New Year’s Day, Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas.

Leaves, Grass, Brush & Snow Collection

Collection crews work year-round with the same equipment. Trucks are outfitted according to the nature of the items being collected.

April 1 to April 30: Crews pick up leaves and grass, hedge trimming and garden waste from tree lawns (never in the street). (Keep grass clippings and leaves separate from brush.)

May 1 to October 15: Place grass clippings in Shaker logo bags and place in rear or side yard with rubbish for regular collection. The City will collect a maximum of ten bags per pick-up. You may schedule a special pick-up ($20) or put additional bags out for collection the following week.

During this season, two separate crews collect rubbish and grass bags. The EPA prohibits collection of yard waste with rubbish.

Grass bag crews pick up from homes displaying yellow door hangers. Display hanger outside the home, on or near the front door, visible from the street.

Bags are available at City Hall, Thornton Park, the Service Center and from local merchants for $1 each. Price includes cost of  bag, collection and disposal of material at a commercial composting site. At no time may leaves, grass, rubbish or brush be placed on center strips, park areas or in the street. There is a 40-pound weight limit per bag.

Compost piles require a permit. Call 216-491-1490 for more information.

The City collects brush from tree lawns every two weeks, except during Leaf Collection season. When crews are busy with snow removal, brush collection is maintained as weather permits only. Landscapers should be advised to remove any brush collected during this time period.

  • Cut brush/tree trimmings into piles no larger than 4’ long and 2’ wide and weighing no more than 40 lbs.
  • Neatly stack brush piles parallel and close to the curb, away from trees, poles, signs and fire hydrants. No brush may be placed on City green spaces.
  • Tie bundles with twine if possible. This makes manual pick-up easier and reduces risk of property damage from collection equipment.
  • Only logs less than 6” wide and under 18” long are picked up. Larger logs are picked up for a fee.

Place brush outside for pick-up the evening before a scheduled collection day. Call 216-491-1490 for your scheduled collection day.

October 15 to December 15: Leaf Collection Season. Crews are equipped to pick up leaves, grass clippings, hedge trimming and garden waste from tree lawns (again, NOT in the street).

December 15 to March 31: Snow Removal Season. Crews salt and plow streets main arteries first, then on residential streets. Residents are responsible for clearing driveways and sidewalks.

During this season, yard waste that is gathered into Shaker logo bags is picked up only if Public Works is alerted. Since trucks are not equipped for this kind of pick-up during Snow Removal Season, call 216-491-1490 to arrange a pick-up.

When it snows, crews are dispatched to the City’s main arteries first, then from residential streets, and as quickly and efficiently as conditions permit. (A list of snow plow contractors who have obtained permits is available online.)

The City plows sidewalks when a snowfall is 6” and at the discretion of the Administration when circumstances warrant (i.e., consistent snowfall which accumulates to 6” or more after several different snow occurrences).

City sidewalk plowing is conducted in the following order:

  • Parts of neighborhoods leading to the schools
  • Main arteries
  • Side streets
