The City was notified of the following by the United States Postal Service on December 31, 2008:
"The Postal Service conducts regular collection box reviews to improve operational efficiency. Over the past several weeks density tests have been performed on all Shaker Heights blue collection boxes to determine actual customer usage.
These tests have revealed that a number of Shaker Heights collection boxes receive little or no usage. In light of these findings, collection of these boxes will discontinue in the near future. The identified collection boxes are being labeled to reflect the change with instructions on where to deposit mail. Since these boxes show little or no usage, we anticipate a negligible customer impact.
Our collection box reviews, like our other ongoing reviews, reflect the responsibility and trust we hold to keep postage rates as low as possible for all our customers by maintaining the highest operational levels possible.
In closing, I would like to mention that the U.S. Postal Service is a unique government agency providing service to the public while receiving no taxpayer dollars. We are totally funded with revenue from our operations. Therefore, to stay healthy we must reduce identifiable inefficiencies. When we can do this while continuing to provide excellent service to the public, it is indeed a win-win situation for the American public and our organization.
If you have any questions regarding this process, please contact Victor Dubina, Communications Programs Specialist at 216-443-4596."
