Second Story Perimeter Railings
Effective January 1, 2007, Shaker homeowners are required to install or maintain a perimeter railing on a second story porch or garage roof that is accessible from the house by a door.
Three drawings of possible railing options suitable for most applications have been approved by the Architectural Board of Review. Each construction drawing contains slightly different details (see below). The railing finish must match the trim color on the house. For example, a painted or dark brown opaque stained railing would be most appropriate for a Tudor style home. Required construction materials and details are noted on each plan.
To obtain a permit for your railing project, you must present a Building Permit Application along with a color photograph of the porch or garage roof area (taken from ground level) to the Planning Department. You must also indicate which railing option you have selected.
