Accreditation
The Shaker Heights Police Department (SHPD) is accredited by the Commission on Accreditations for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA). The Commission includes the following professional associations:
- International Association of Chiefs of Police
- National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives
- National Sheriffs’ Association
- Police Executive Research Forum
Earning the CALEA accreditation seal is the mark of professional excellence. The seals are reserved only for law enforcement agencies demonstrating the highest professional standards. SHPD has received the CALEA seal annually since 1989.
SHPD was the first agency in Cuyahoga County to be nationally accredited and was one of three in the state at the time. Only approximately 4 percent of all law enforcement agencies in the United States are CALEA accredited.
As part of our Accreditation process, the public is asked to use this link [http://cimrs2.calea.org/665] to submit comments regarding our agency's compliance with CALEA standards, engagement in the service community, delivery of public safety services, and overall candidacy for accredited status. These comments can be in the form of commendations or concerns. The overall intent of the accreditation process is to provide the participating agency with information to support continuous improvement, as well as foster the pursuit of professional excellence.
NOTE: CALEA is not an investigatory body and subsequently the public portal should not be used to submit information for such purposes. Additionally, there will be no response other than acknowledgment of submissions; however, the information will be considered in context to its relevancy to compliance with standards and the tenets of CALEA® Accreditation.
