Shaker Heights Named Bicycle Friendly Community

The League of American Bicyclists announced today that it has again honored the City of Shaker Heights with a bronze level Bicycle Friendly Community (BFC) award, a distinction the City also earned during the last round of eligibility in 2016.

“This Bicycle Friendly Community award is the culmination of years of work put in by Shaker Heights and its citizen advocates for better biking,” says Bill Nesper, executive director of the League of American Bicyclists. “Shaker Heights joins 51 new and renewing Bicycle Friendly Communities in the movement toward healthier, more sustainable and connected places.”

Shaker Heights is one of 485 communities across the country — and just 20 in Ohio — to be recognized by the BFC program for a strong commitment to bicycle friendly policies, education and infrastructure.

“We have actively worked to improve bicycle infrastructure and to encourage bicycling in our community,” says Mayor David E. Weiss. “We are honored to have the League of American Bicyclists recognize our efforts.”

Recently, those efforts have included the completed multipurpose paths on Warrensville Center Road and Farnsleigh Road in the Van Aken District.

The BFC award must be renewed every four years through a rigorous application process that considers not only infrastructure, but also education and events, including those promoting equity around bicycling. The City would like to thank the Shaker Historical Society, Heights Bicycle Coalition and Bike Cleveland for their ongoing collaboration with the City around bicycling, including their contributions to the Bicycle Friendly Community application process.
