[ARCHIVED] Hydrant Flushing Underway

Green fire hydrant in Shaker Heights, Ohio

The Shaker Heights Fire Department will flush the City's fire hydrants from October 12-24. Hydrant flushing is an important preventive maintenance activity that maintains the integrity of the water system and enables the Fire Department to ensure hydrants are in working order. Hydrant flushing signs are attached to the hydrants the day before flushing is scheduled.

Please note, your home's tap water may become discolored after your neighborhood's hydrants have been flushed. This is normal and not dangerous. The flushing process can dislodge sediment and rust from our pipes, thereby discoloring the water. If your water is discolored, simply shut the water off and wait a few minutes. Then run cold water for a few minutes to allow new water to enter your pipes. If the water is still discolored, wait a few more minutes and run the water again. In some cases, discoloration will occur for a few hours.
