Road SaltSensible Salting: Road salt negatively impacts the environment by damaging aquatic life when it runs off into local streams. To protect the environment, the City uses alternative de-icing techniques and sensible salting strategies so that the amount of road salt reaching local waterways is reduced. Learn More About The Cuyahoga County Solar Co-opIn recent years, rooftop solar has become an increasingly common and affordable way to reduce household energy costs while decreasing reliance on fossil fuels.
Thinking about a solar installation? Join the County’s 2021 Solar Co-op, which is offered in partnership with Solar United Neighbors (a nonprofit solar advocacy group), and enables members to save money by negotiating below market rate group pricing. In addition to existing federal tax credits, Co-op members generally save 15-20 percent on the cost of their system. Members also receive vendor-neutral support throughout the entire process. Take the Survey for an Equitable Future For Northeast Ohio The Northeast Ohio Areawide Coordinating Agency (NOACA) is seeking public input on various transportation scenarios for its Long-Range Plan, eNEO2050: An Equitable Future for Northeast Ohio. The plans NOACA makes today will affect future generations in Northeast Ohio. Four scenarios have been prepared that ask questions such as: What would the region's future look like if road systems were expanded? What would a combination of road and transit expansions and emerging technology look like? What would it look like if the current infrastructure continued to be maintained?

Shaker Heights Wins 2020 Bicycle-Friendly Community Award The League of American Bicyclists announced that it has again honored the City of Shaker Heights with a bronze level Bicycle Friendly Community (BFC) award, a distinction the City also earned during the last round of eligibility in 2016.
Shaker Heights is one of 485 communities across the country — and just 20 in Ohio — to be recognized by the BFC program for a strong commitment to bicycle friendly policies, education and infrastructure.

Holiday Recycling Here are a few helpful recycling tips for Christmas trees, wreaths and a number of other holiday items:
Trees & Wreaths: May be left on the tree lawn for recycling. Please remove all decorations, tinsel, etc. Tree/wreath pickup, which is handled by the brush crew, will continue through mid-January and does not coincide with your regular trash day. Please don't bag your tree or wreath; this interferes with the recycling process.
Lights: Can be taken to the Solid Waste District facility in Garfield Heights.
Wrapping Materials & Holiday Cards: Holiday gift wrap, cards, and boxes that are 100 percent paper can be recycled. Ribbons, bows, glitter, foil, and gift wrap that is not 100 percent paper belong in the trash.

Update On Return to Hybrid/Onsite Learning Shaker Heights Schools will continue with remote learning when students return from Winter Break on January 4. High School students will begin a phased-in return on Monday, January 11 and students in grades PreK-8 will return to the onsite learning schedule on Tuesday, January 19. Leading For Equity Virtual Workshops Sundays, February 7 and 14 9 am-12 pm Orientation and Introduction to Power and Privilege Thursday, February 25 5:30-8:30 pm Interpersonal Racism New One Shaker will host a series of virtual equity workshops February 7, 14 and 25. Participants will reflect as individuals and meet in small groups. These free sessions will also include caucusing, in which participants who are of color and those who are white meet separately with a facilitator to discuss issues of race and equity. This workshop is designed for those who want an intensive experience on the dynamics of diversity, understanding power and privilege, defining the four levels of racism, and learning how to lead in our schools and the broader community with an equity lens.
