City to Launch Green Electric Aggregation Program


At its July 25 meeting, City Council gave the go ahead for the City to create its own 100 percent renewably sourced electric aggregation program for residents and small businesses. The opt-out program will start in January 2023 and replace the City's current electric aggregation program with NOPEC. Learn more at shakeronline.com/greenelectric.

Get Ready for Election Day


Helpful reminders for the August 2 primary election:
  • Early in-person voting is available at the Cuyahoga County Board of Elections (2925 Euclid Avenue) through Monday, August 1 at 2 pm. 
  • Vote-by-mail ballot requests must be received by the BOE by THIS Saturday, July 30 at noon; vote-by-mail ballots must be postmarked no later than August 1. Voters may drop off vote-by-mail ballots at the BOE until 7:30 pm on August 2.
  • Polls will be open on Tuesday, August 2 from 6:30 am-7:30 pm.
  • Check polling locations and view a sample ballot at the BOE website.

Election Sign Recycling: Recycle campaign yard signs at the Service Center (15600 Chagrin Blvd.)8 am-4pm on the two weekends following any election by the Cuyahoga County Board of Elections.

This is the FINAL WEEKEND to submit your nominations for the 2022 Heritage Tree Award. Past nominations have celebrated trees of unusual size, historical value, age or form. Others hold special value because their planting marked a familial or business event of importance. Submit your 2022 nominations by Sunday, July 31.

Get an up-close understanding of the Shaker Heights Police and Fire departments by participating in the Citizens Police Academy. This 10-week program is open to Shaker Heights residents and those who work in the City full-time. Classes are held Thursday evenings from 7-10 pm and begin September 8. Learn more and apply.

CERT Seeks Volunteers 


The Community Emergency Response Team (CERT), made up of volunteers who assist the City’s Fire Department during emergencies, will conduct a 10-week training program this fall. Shaker CERT is one of the more than 1,000 CERT teams in the United States, a program sponsored by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). Training will be Thursdays 6:30-9 pm, from September 9 to November 10. Interested? Contact Louis Bottone at 216-491-1205 or send an email.

RTA: Blue Line Closure July 30-31


On Saturday, July 30 and Sunday, July 31 RTA Blue Line rail service will be replaced with 67R buses between Shaker Square and Warrensville-Van Aken stations due to work on the system. Look for 67R bus stops on Van Aken Blvd. across from the Rapid stops. 67R buses will operate every 30 minutes.

Chagrin Blvd. Resurfacing Update: Phase 2 of this project starts the week of August 8 between Lee and Avalon roads. Eastbound traffic, including the 14/14A bus, will be detoured to Van Aken Blvd. Learn more.

Jump in after hours for a "dive-in" movie experience at the Thornton Park Pool! Entrance to the pool for this event begins at 8 pm and the movie, Encanto, will begin at 8:30 pm. Regular admission fees and policies apply. Pool passes accepted.

Brighten up your Wednesday evenings with free live music at The Van Aken District. Performances are held outdoors on the green space on Tuttle Road near the Market Hall. Concerts start at 7 pm.

Learn where electric vehicle charging stations are located in Shaker Heights. City-installed stations are AC Level 2, capable of supplying up to 7.2kW through the industry-standard J-1772 connector. All electric vehicles can use this connector (including Tesla with its adapter).

Also, learn if an electric vehicle will work for you by exploring the latest EV models. Members of the Drive Electric Northeast Ohio local EV car club will be on hand to share their experiences. This is one of several National Drive Electric Week events in our region.
