Van Aken District Phase 2

VAD Phase 2 construction crane installation

Gilbane Construction installed a tower crane at the site for phase two of The Van Aken District, the new apartment building under construction at the northwest corner of Farnsleigh Rd. and Van Aken Blvd. This tower crane is approximately 250 feet tall and will be in place through fall 2023. Note that during off hours, the crane will not be locked in place and will turn with the wind. This is called weathervaning and is a safe and common practice with tower cranes. In fact, it is not uncommon to see a tower crane weathervaning 360 degrees, especially during heavy winds. Learn more about Phase 2, including construction updates.

Winter Fire Safety

The Shaker Heights Professional Firefighters urge residents to review the following safety tips for use of space heaters. Also, please take a look to make sure CO and smoke detectors are working, plus:

  • Check the heater's cord, if it is frayed, don't use it. Frayed cords may spark and start a fire.
  • Plug your heater into the electrical outlet. Do not use an extension cord with space heaters.
  • Keep your space heaters at least 3 feet from anything that can burn.

Smoke Detectors Available

If you need a smoke detector, call the Shaker Heights Fire Department at 216-491-1200 and leave a message in the general mailbox. A firefighter will get back to you to arrange drop off. No charge. They will even help you install it. Smoke detectors save lives.
