Mayor's Report Focuses on Mental Health

Free Composting for Lomond Residents

The City and Rust Belt Riders have officially launched the new pilot composting program for the Lomond neighborhood. Lomond residents can sign up for this FREE program, which is funded by a grant from Cuyahoga Recycles.

CERT Seeks Volunteers

The Fire Department’s Community Emergency Response Team will conduct a training academy from September 7 to November 9. If you are interested in participating in the training and learning more about the program, please contact Fire Inspector Louis Bottone at 216-491-3205 or by email. Learn more about CERT.

Enroll in the Citizen's Police Academy

Interested in learning more about the work of the Police Department? Register for the fall session of Citizen’s Police Academy. The 10-week session will meet on Thursdays, 7-10 pm, September 7. Learn more and register.

Memorial Day Ceremony & Parade

Monday, May 29; Ceremony at 9 am; parade to follow

Join us to kick off summer with this beloved Shaker tradition. The ceremony will begin at 9 am on the front lawn of City Hall (3400 Lee Rd.). Immediately following, the parade will proceed from the intersection of Lee Rd. and Van Aken Blvd. east to the Van Aken District in the westbound lane of Van Aken Blvd.

Swim-Skate-Climbathon

Saturday, June 3, 8:30-10 am

Are you ready for a unique experience? Join the Recreation Department and Shaker Rocks for a morning of fun for all ages. Participants will skate, swim and climb their way to the finish line. Proceeds will benefit EDWINS Institute. Please register by May 29.

National Night Out with Shaker Police

SAVE THE DATE: Tuesday, August 1, 6-8 pm

Across the country, National Night Out promotes partnerships between police and the community through a fun festival. This year, Shaker Heights will participate for the first time - at the Colonnade (adjacent to the Stephanie Tubbs Jones Building). More.

Thornton Park Pool Opens May 27

The Thornton Park Pool opens for the season, Saturday, May 27. The toddler pool and lap swimming will be available from 9-11 am and the pool will be available for open swimming from 11 am-7:30 pm on May 27 and 28. On Monday, May 29, the pool will be open from 10 am-5 pm for open swimming.

Shaker Recreation summer camps begin the week of June 12. Many of the most popular camps are already full, but spaces do remain in some camps including Junior Raider Baseball, Basketball, Flag Football, Track, and Wrestling Camps, as well as some Skyhawks Camps. Register online.

Keep Up with Construction

Keep up with roadwork, utility upgrades, and other work to the public infrastructure all season long at Construction Zone on the City's website.

NOTE: Starting June 19, the Green Road and Bryden Road intersection will close for approximately four months as the cities of Beachwood and Shaker Heights work to replace a culvert at this location. Learn more.

Break Boxes Down for Recycling, Please!

A reminder that cardboard boxes should be broken down before being set out for recycling. Please break boxes down into about the size of a newspaper so crews can efficiently collect this material for recycling. Thank you!

Board of Education Approves Long-Term Master Facilities Plan

On May 22, the Shaker Heights Board of Education unanimously approved a Long-Term Master Facilities Plan that will serve the community for decades to come. The plan is the product of two years of extensive discussion, research and community feedback and will be segmented into two separate ballot issues, with the bond issue for the first segment appearing on the November 2023 ballot. 2023 Shaker Heights Commencement on June 6

Shaker Heights Commencement will be held on Tuesday, June 6, at 6 pm at the Bert L. and Iris S. Wolstein Center. Wesley Lowery, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist, reporter, editor, best-selling author and Class of 2008 graduate, will be the commencement speaker. The ceremony will be livestreamed and can be viewed here, or via BoxCast.
