300-year-old tree felled during September 13 storm

Plans Underway For Toppled
300-year-old tree

A 300-year-old white oak was among the many trees damaged or destroyed during the severe thunderstorm on Friday, September 13. Thanks to the coordinated efforts of the City, Doan Brook Watershed Partnership and Nature Center at Shaker Lakes, sections of this historic natural wonder will be preserved. Doan Brook Watershed Partnership will auction sections of the tree  as a fundraiser to help plant more trees. A large log will be placed at the Nature Center to honor the mighty oak and the City will leave 1-2 feet of the stump in place for children (or adults) to count the rings.

Shaker Libraries initiate fine free program

Shaker Library System Goes 'Fine Free' Starting October 1

In an effort to increase patron access, the Shaker Heights Library system is joining many other libraries across the country by going “fine free,” effective October 1. By doing so, the library removes barriers to access and eliminates administrative costs associated with managing fines. Overdue fines do not generate a substantial source of income for the library.

Reminders
Fall leaf collection schedule

Leaf Collection Begins October 15

With the arrival of fall, leaf collection starts soon! Here are some handy tips:
  • Leaf season runs from October 15 to mid-December
  • Residents should rake leaves to their tree lawns for collection by City crews
  • Continue to place brush (large branches) on the tree lawn; please keep brush separate from leaves
Collections will take place approximately every two weeks. Please refrain from raking leaves into the street, as they can clog storm drains and create dangerous driving conditions. Learn more.
