Mayor David E. Weiss
Dear Resident,

Good morning and Happy Memorial Day. I know how much we love to gather on this day for our traditional ceremony and parade. Unfortunately, this year that is just not possible. Instead, we've created a virtual celebration to remember our fallen soldiers and have created some activities to help honor the day.

I hope you will take a few minutes to watch the videos and to reflect upon the service and sacrifice of our military heroes. Next year, I look forward to being together for this important and beloved celebration.

Respectfully,

David E. Weiss

Watch: Virtual Memorial Day Ceremony and Parade

Memorial Day means honoring the brave fallen heroes of our nation, reflecting on their sacrifice, and celebrating the freedom for which they valiantly fought.

As we honor these brave men and women, we invite you to watch our virtual pre-recorded ceremony at https://youtu.be/OWrD78zu0e0

Ceremony program: Wreath presentation by Corporal Ray Lezak, U.S.M.C.,  Gun Salute by the Shaker Heights Honor Guard, Taps performed by Shaker Heights High School students Sara Dina and Nick Voyzey, and remarks from Mayor David E. Weiss.

Following that, please enjoy a video of last year's parade at https://youtu.be/7EYxOUII31Y

The ceremony and parade will also be posted to the City's Instagram and Facebook pages.

We invite you to further commemorate #ShakerMemorialDay2020 by creating and sharing Memorial Day Moments close to home. These moments of remembrance will be seen by others out for a neighborhood walk and will help to make the day special.

Start the day by:

  • Displaying your American flag
  • Making lawn signs to honor a beloved fallen hero
  • Creating inspiring chalk art and messages along sidewalks

End the day by:

  • Turning on a front light or carefully placing a candle in a front window at 8pm and observe a Citywide moment of quiet reflection in honor of our fallen soldiers.

Please share with us a picture of your Memorial Day Moments or others you come across and tag the City of Shaker Heights on Instagram or Facebook for #ShakerMemorialDay2020.
