Van Aken Market HallScorpacciata Pasta Co. has opened a pizza stall. Lox, Stock & Brisket, Old Brooklyn Cheese Company, and Domo Yakitori & Sushi all plan to open later this summer.
Expanding Opportunity in the District Two new pop up stalls in the Market Hall – one for food and one for retail – are part of the new Van Aken Entrepreneur Initiative, which is intended to lower barriers associated with starting up or expanding a business, especially for people of color, women, and other underrepresented entrepreneurs.
The program provides wrap-around support services from other merchants, non-profits and partners — including the City of Shaker Heights and Ohio Small Business Development Center at the Urban League of Greater Cleveland — to help businesses grow into the future restaurateurs and merchants in the Van Aken District and beyond.

Helping new businesses open their doors in Shaker Heights is just part of what the City's Economic Development Department does. Supporting existing businesses is also central to our efforts. Below we share just some of our recent work.

COVID-19: Business as UN-UsualThe work of the City's Economic Development Department changed almost overnight with the onset of the COVID-19 crisis. Our goal throughout this unprecedented emergency: to help our locally owned businesses survive and, perhaps, even thrive.
Specifically, the Department has worked hard to: - Ensure that our small businesses stay informed and can access available emergency resources from federal, state and local governments and organizations. This has included weekly editions of our Business ENews and a substantive, frequently updated Resources for Business section of the City's website.
- Create opportunities to listen to local business owners and support their needs. Specifically, we collaborated with the Shaker Heights Development Corporation (SHDC) to host two Virtual Roundtable Discussions. Based on feedback from those events, we're rolling out additional supports for our business community, including educational seminars, hands-on workshops, helping to source personal protective equipment (PPE) where necessary and even creating personal welcome back videos - parts one and two.
- Find new ways for Shaker businesses to do business. For example, we helped Picnic Hill Market Café and the Van Aken Market Hall expand outdoor dining opportunities. And we launched a new video concept to provide small businesses with marketing assistance; here are the first two: SH Animal Hospital and Budget Ease.

Storefront Renovation Program: Grants for Shaker Businesses Among the important ways the City's Economic Development Department is able to help our local business is the Storefront Renovation Program. This program provides matching grants for businesses who make improvements to the exteriors of their buildings, whether it is new signage or a new facade.
Some recent examples of this program at work include:

J. Pistone One World Market is Celebrating 20 Years in ShakerIn 2000, siblings John and Joan Pistone opened J.Pistone Market and Gathering Place. During the recent governor ordered closure of restaurants, John and Joan took the time to make adjustments to their business model, renaming the business J. Pistone One World Market and refreshing their dining room.
Just in time for their 20th Anniversary, John and Joan welcomed customers back offering their tried and true “Chef-prepared foods” using the freshest of ingredients, a patisserie, wine shop, local product market, and fresh produce. Stop by J. Pistone at 3245 Warrensville Center Rd. – staying safely distanced or via curbside service – to enjoy this delightful gathering place in Shaker Heights.
