Fall 2021

Dear Shaker Resident,

The holiday season is here! This time of year is when many of our small businesses, particularly retail, food & beverage, and personal services, make a large portion of their annual revenue. Therefore, much of this update focuses on ways to embrace Small Business Saturday and shopping local throughout the year. With so many out of the (big) box gifting ideas, you won’t need to leave Shaker to fulfill holiday wish list dreams!

We all know that small businesses are an essential part of the Shaker experience. To express our gratitude, the City's Economic Development Department hosts the Shaker Heights Business Appreciation Mixer (SH-BAM), an event for businesses to enjoy themselves and connect with business neighbors. We’ve provided a recap of this year's virtual event so you can learn about some of the lesser known attributes and contributions for which our local businesses were recognized.

We hope you make this holiday season a safe and special one, supporting local as much as you are able.

Regards,
Laura Englehart

Shop Small for the Holidays

Saturday, November 27 is Small Business Saturday!

Small Business Saturday is the “shopping holiday” between Black Friday and Cyber Monday where consumers are encouraged to support local businesses by shopping small. American Express launched this shopping holiday in 2010, at the height of the Great Recession, as a way of redirecting holiday shopping to local stores. More than a decade later, it is now observed in all 50 states. As you know, small businesses are critical to the success of Shaker Heights. To this end, Mayor Weiss issued a proclamation in support of shopping small and supporting our business community. Plus, the City, Shaker Heights Development Corporation and Heights-Hillcrest Regional Chamber of Commerce are Neighborhood Champions and have supplied more than 25 businesses with great customer swag including reusable shopping bags, face masks, stickers, and posters.

New Developments in Chagrin + Lee

The Chagrin-Lee area has a lot going on! On the heels of the adaptive reuse of a former bank for the Shaker Heights Animal Hospital earlier this fall, another renovation is underway just up the block. Irie Jamaican Kitchen will soon be opening its fourth location at 16614 Chagrin Boulevard. (across the street from Heinen’s). Next to Walgreen’s, a new building is going up to house a Bank of America branch.  And, construction of a new senior living development, Harbor Chase, is well underway on Van Aken Boulevard. (Read more about the Harbor Chase project here.)

Additionally, the City is preparing to launch a year-long community process to create a visionary reinvestment plan for the Lee Road corridor south of Van Aken Boulevard. This process will envision a comprehensive transformation of the area into a thriving corridor and commercial district that is attractive, walkable, bikeable, transit-oriented, business-friendly and primed for new development. Stay tuned for ways to get involved and provide your feedback starting in early 2022.

2021 SH-BAM Recap

The City's Economic Development Department hosts the Shaker Heights Business Appreciation Mixer (or SH-BAM) annually to celebrate our local business community. In partnership with the Heights-Hillcrest Regional Chamber of Commerce and the Shaker Heights Development Corporation, we held the celebratory event virtually the past two years and created a recognition program to acknowledge the hard work and perseverance of our local businesses community. You can watch this year’s event recording here.

This year, the following businesses were recognized for their outstanding attributes in 14 different categories. To see last year’s recognition list, check out our new SH-BAM webpage here.

SH-BAM 2021 Recognitions

When One Door Closes, Another Opens

This fall and into early winter, several businesses have or will be closing their doors. Phenomenal U closed its Shaker Heights location in October and reopened in a smaller scale location in Woodmere. We wish Latoya all the best in her new space.

Lucy's Sweet Surrender has officially ceased baking operations. Owners Michael and Marika are retiring to spend more time with family and generally rest. Their delicious European baked goods will certainly be missed at both their brick and mortar shop at District South and at the North Union Farmers Market. Michael and Marika have truly earned this next stage of their lives; we hope it is as sweet as all of the years they provided cakes, donuts, cookies and breads for our community's celebrations. Enjoy the good life, Michael and Marika!

Bicycle Boulevard opened in Shaker Heights in 1994. Owner Frank Hall has provided new bikes, accessories and repair service to generations of Shakerites. Due to the impact of the supply chain issues of 2020 and 2021, Frank has decided to close his doors on December 18. Until then, stop by for closing markdowns and to wish Frank well as he enters his next chapter. The shop does have an ample number of kid's bikes available. Shop hours are: Tuesday and Friday, 2-6 pm and Saturday, 10 am-3 pm. Thank you, Frank for contributing to Shaker's bike-friendly status. Bicycle Boulevard will truly be missed.

Spice for Life, located in the Van Aken Market Hall, is closing December 30 due to the impact of the pandemic. Until then, please continue to support this local, Shaker-resident women-owned shop. They have plenty of spices on hand and will do their best to fulfill orders through the end of the year. Owners Penny, Gigi and Debbie started this business with a passion for flavor, but also as a social justice enterprise. The Renee Jones Empowerment Center, an organization which focuses its efforts on advocacy and social support for the survivors of human trafficking, is the beneficiary of their mission. Thank you for adding three years of spice and social justice to Shaker!

While these businesses are closing, this means there are opportunities for new businesses to open in Shaker. We will share new business openings as they occur. Stay tuned!
